Bastet was worshipped in Bubastis in Lower Egypt, originally as a lioness goddess, a role shared by other deities such as Sekhmet. She protected the home from evil spirits and disease, especially diseases associated with women and children. Bastet was the goddess of protection, pleasure, and the bringer of good health. She had the head of a cat and a slender female body.
